You do buy Aragami because it's a slick, fun and subtle stealth adventure filled with a lot of old school ninja charm. Walk forwards to meet Yamiko, or at least her projection. You’ve been summoned by Yamiko, a girl imprisoned in the city fortress of Kyuryu. Thankfully though, that's not what you buy a game like Aragami for. The first chapter is fairly straightforward and is more like a tutorial. There are a few technical faults and glitches which take away from the game, and even though the art style is decent, the graphics don't always hold up, especially for a current gen game. There's even a second player option available via online play that all comes together to further the replayability of Aragami. Another interesting reason to make sure you're not seen is the competitive element at the end of each level you are ranked on how well you did were you seen, did you kill every enemy, did you get through the entire level without killing a soul? These all factor into your final score at the end of every level. In fact, one hit from an enemy will kill you so you need to weave around the many opponents that litter each level, with the numbers increasing significantly as you progress through the game. The gameplay, the meat of Aragami, centres around the player never being seen - the reason for this being that an Aragami is not invincible. It's an excellent touch that gives Aragami a definitive and unique tone as well as certain charms which are all of its own.
A particular favourite of mine is summoning a shadow beast to obliterate your victims of choice.Īn understated score permeates throughout Aragami, giving it a subtle sense of tension and wonder as you traverse this ancient world. From a shadow teleport that allows you to sneak up and slit the throat of your target to you actually forming a black hole that sucks up groups of enemies and dumps them in oblivion, there is a lot of variety available to you to deal death to your foes.
